Building A Community Development Corporation Essay

Located in Olneyville is one of the community’s best assets. One Neighborhood builders, a community development corporation also referred to as a CDC. Like many other CDC’s One Neighborhood builders is a not-for-profit community action group. One Neighborhood builders takes pride is creating affordable housing. Their mission â€Å"is to work with residents to build a safe, healthy, and stable community. We accomplish our mission through four lines of business: (1) creation and preservation of affordable housing, and development of commercial real estate to spur economic development, (2) ONE Neighborhood Works – our social enterprise which prepares young people for work while providing landscaping and maintenance services in the neighborhood’s public spaces, (3) individual asset building to prepare families for homeownership, and (4) community building and organizing to strengthen the neighborhood’s social fabric† (One Neighborhood Builders, 2016, p. 1). Upon walking into the main office, located at 66 Chaffee Street I noticed a friendly receptionist sitting toward the door to assist anyone walking in. She was able to tell me a little about what was going on in the office and the services offered. At the time of my visit a workshop in Spanish was being given to residents about fighting predatory lending. Other services offered are tax preparation called VITA which offers free tax preparations by a volunteer who is trained through the IRS to prepare taxes.
